A big thank you to Frank Davis - Tournament Director & Referee and Mary - Scorekeeper.
This TN Open Tournament is over and congratulations to its directors, and all who participated. It was a wonderful tourney as usual. The players would like to offer a gracious "thank you" to all who helped, especially Frank & Mary Davis, Ken Christian, and others.
There was a nice $2,895.00 Total Cash Prize from mostly the "General Tennessee Lindsay Fund", accounting for $1,549.00 with additional entry fees and donations. There were numerous door prizes given out by drawing player names from the player pairing cards administrated by Mary. Three tickets for free steaks, and the 15% meal discount on all meals from next door Ponderosa Steakhouse. Cracker Barrel donated 3 meal tickets for 2, Shoney's gave 3 certificates for free Buffet & Drink of which I won one of these, and they also offered 10% off to all checker players. The Camber of Commerce gave a checkerboard & checkers, 4 tickets to Ruby-Tuesday, Chamber bucks ($30), and miscellaneous items. Wilson Co. Convention & Visitor Center gave 3 umbrellas, goody bags, and miscellaneous items, plus a representative was there Friday morning answering questions, giving away calendars, and information package, etc. We also appreciate the pr work by Frank and his tournament relationship with Americas Best Value Inn & Suite and their sponsoring the Friday evening pizza party for all the Checker Players.
Mr. Frank Davis opened the ty by welcoming 54 players from 14 States. The TN Checker Association business meeting included recognizing our World, National, District, and State Checker Champions. Alex Moiseyev reported on his World status. We voting on retaining the TCA officers for next year, Frank gave the status of the Lindsay Fund and told us next years interest would be lower. We also voted on tournament winners moving up, and last round pairing. Ken Christian announced the Duplin' Day Ty sponsored by Cracker Barrel and prize fund details. The organizers ask for the TN Checker Association players' participation in this event. John Acker gave an update on our National Tournament and offered an opportunity to support this important tourney. A short statement from ACF President, Alan Millhone and Sec/Tres, Kim Willis was included in this meeting. The top states represented by the most players were: Tennessee (16), Kentucky (10), and North Carolina (7). Others States represented were: Alabama and Ohio had 3 each, GA, IN, LA, OK, TX, and WV had 2 each, FL, MO, and PA had one each. We had four past or current National Champions and eight State Champions, plus three new first time tournament players: Natalie Marshall of Morristown, TN Lee Ramsey of Pine Hill, AL and Royce Burnett of Lebanon, TN competed for the first time in the minors division. Clint Holmes showed us his nice pens & pencils for sell, Lynn Steelman had boards for sell, and Kathleen Mohr had vinyl checkerboard & checkers in a carrying tube.
This was an exciting and wonderful checker tournament. Plenty of returning players and new participants like the Gobers, Neil Wenberg, and Hugh Hawkins, all excellent players but new to the TN Open.
We have grown to expect John Acker's internet reporting when he participates in a tournament. You can read his daily updates and comments on ACF forum. Read
The American Best Value Inn & Suite, in Lebanon has adequate facilities as a checker venue. Frank is also hosting the 2010 Southern here. Hotel Management again showed their appreciation for our checker tournament business by providing a Papa John's catered pizza party Friday afternoon at 6:00 pm for all the checker players. They provided soft drinks, bottle water, and 40 large assorted combination pizzas. Plenty for everyone!
There were plenty of wives who attended and a number of checker friends like: Master Hugh Burton, a promoter and preserver of checkers and Steve Watkins a master player who intends to get back into tournament checkers, each came to watch and visit throughout the tournament.
Vonda Jones baked several homemade delicious coconut cakes and cookies. Natalie Marshall did the same bringing several delicious chocolate pies and a large container of fudge. Betty Darst sent the players a fruit arrangement. Frank Davis, Larry Pollard, and David Marshall conducted our Sunday morning worship service, and played a selection of music...
Frank Davis - President of Tennessee Checker Association and Director of the Tennessee Open.
Mary Davis - Secretary/Treasurer of TCA and administrator / score-keeper of the Tennessee Open.
This is one of the best tourneys on the checker circuit.
